How would your organisation cope with the introduction of data breach legislation?

With the continued occurrence of cyber crime, which is often unreported or reported late by organisations, there have been numerous suggestions to introduce data breach legislation into Australia. Compelling companies to report privacy breaches and any incidents of cyber crime immediately, this will heighten the magnitude of having adequate and efficient mail security such as Endian in order to prevent the occurrence, and possible legal action resulting from cyber crime incidents.

Internet and email have become staples for all businesses, with a large portion of company intelligence contained within emails and many business transactions undertaken electronically each day. Combined with the prevalence of social media as a company marketing tool, organisations are faced with extensive risk of cyber crime each and every day of operation.

Veritech Corporation CEO Livio Mazzon believes that access to emails and consequent cyber crime is one of the greatest risks to business.

“Apart from physical break-ins, email leakage now constitutes one of the greatest risks to businesses. As a result of its global success, email is the most commonly used method of inter-business communication.  Email can detail negotiations, pricing, and sensitive business intelligence.  Given that the best way to beat your competitors is to know how they operate, then why wouldn’t they target your lines of communications?” stated Mr Mazzon.

There are numerous risks and common scenarios that result in cyber crime, with some presented to be quite authentic and ‘tricky’. The risk of sending an email to the wrong person is all too effortless, not to mention the costly risk of someone getting into your mailbox through either password cracking or intrusion. A common risk we are seeing more and more each day is the use of email as the default medium to send scams, particularly social-engineering style tricks to ploy users into visiting a site, or typing a password.  Some of these emails are very clever, and look authentic.  It’s extremely easy to be misled by them.

“Today over 75% of all email is spam, and with the high incidence of identity theft occurring every day, it is all too simple to be faced with numerous attacks of cyber crime. Then there is the prevalence of social networking tools that are assisting the high incidence of cyber crime in today’s society, and this will no doubt increase in the future.  Every organisation must be aware of this high level of risk, and need to ensure that they are implementing solutions to prevent and combat, rather than reacting when an incident occurs.  That is, should you realise that some breach has occurred”, said Mr Mazzon.

A recent case in Australia highlights the prevalence of cyber crime or the “not so prevalent” as we may think.

The personal details of thousands of Dell Australia customers fell into the wrong hands, exposing the customers to hackers who could contact them pretending to represent the company.

With this same case security professionals say that many other companies with Australian customers were likely to have been affected but we may never know which ones because there is no law forcing the companies to disclose security breaches such as this.

Mr Mazzon is in avid support for the data breach legislation in Australia and feels that, with the quality of security products on the market, companies should be preventing cyber crime and related risks as much as possible, and if not they must be liable to at least report it to customers who are placed at risk.

Mr Mazzon continued “It’s ludicrous that there are so many cyber crime incidents that are either unreported or reported at a much later date, when there is access to quality security products such as Endian throughout the country and the world. Australia needs a basic yet effective approach to get organisations to hold data with adequate security!”

Suitable for small-medium sized business the Endian Unified Threat Management (UTM) systems are distributed throughout Australia by Veritech Corporation, and provide an effective solution to drastically reducing the occurrence of cyber crime.

Thanks to transparent proxies Endian UTM secures any mail server or client, protecting your day-to-day email communications from spam or viruses.  Any mail server like Microsoft Exchange or Domino as well as mail programs like Microsoft Outlook or Thunderbird will automatically be protected and filtered by Endian UTM antivirus and antispam, there is no need to change settings.

In addition, the POP3 and SMTP proxies filter everything coming in or out of your network, enhancing the protection of your mail clients, such as Microsoft Outlook, Mozilla Thunderbird, Evolution, and Apple Mail.

Mr Mazzon in recommending the Endian, said “Just the standard feature set of the Endian UTM includes an integrated ClamAV, the most powerful open source antivirus in existence.  To ensure an even higher possible security level, businesses can select an optional Sophos module. Whichever option is used, every infected email is blocked and you can be informed via email of the origin and nature of the virus.  Businesses even have the scope to personalise their spam filter to maximise its effect.  Endian’s intelligent software learns from its own mistakes and it is thus possible to train it to recognise incoming spam mail more accurately.”
