Endian, the leading provider of open source network security solutions, has gone virtual, releasing a version of its Unified Threat Management (UTM) software for virtual infrastructure.
The Endian UTM Virtual Appliance is the latest addition to the Endian suite of products and is specifically designed to secure internal virtual business environments, hosting and co-location facilities and cloud services.
Veritech Corporation’s Chief Executive Officer, and Endian Distribution Partner for Australia and New Zealand, Mr Livio Mazzon said the increasing popularity of virtual machines has led Endian to develop a version of its UTM that is optimised specifically for virtual environments.
“The Endian UTM Virtual Appliance provides businesses with effective network security solutions to help them secure their entire virtual infrastructure in an efficient and cost-effective way,” Mr Mazzon said.
“Virtual machines allow multiple computer systems to run on the one box, providing more efficient usage of processing resources and space. They are also easy to backup, restore and transfer which makes them a solution of choice for many businesses that are looking to save time and money on hosting services.”
“The Endian Virtual Appliance has been designed so it can be installed multiple times with each install being coupled with one customer on the hosted environment – users do not need to purchase an extra box to run the Endian software. This is useful for datacenter operators as it saves rack space, is cost effective for them and their customers, and makes troubleshooting easier as the network connections can be controlled via a management interface from anywhere in the world. This is opposed to a situation where you have cables connecting the various servers and need someone to physically connect or disconnect them onsite in order to troubleshoot network problems,” he said.
Mr Mazzon said datacenters could also sell their virtual machines as a complete solution – a web server with UTM security – with customers able to activate or leave idle a range of security features offered by the UTM such as the firewall, virus and spam filtering for email, content filter for web traffic and intrusion detection.
After only a few months on the market, Veritech has already received a large number of enquiries about the Virtual Appliance, with the product being rolled out into a range of virtual environments.
Veritech’s Technical Support Consultant, Mr Gerard Simms said that the Virtual Appliance has been well received in the industry due to its ease of use and smooth install process.
“The IT industry is abuzz about virtualization and Endian’s Virtual Machine has been designed so that any server administrator can manage it – you don’t need to be a network professional,” Mr Simms said.
“The product is very straightforward and easy to install on virtual infrastructure. What can take up to 45 minutes to install and configure using traditional software can take only 15 minutes using Endian VMware Virtual Appliance,” he said.
